Think about this case: your  website has 1,200  posts, 11 pages, 15categories, 2,500 comments, uses 15 widgets, and has 30 active plug-ins. On top of all those elements, you use Windows Live Writer to create all of my content and also use a good bit of screenshots and graphics in your   posts. As a result you have over 35 MB of images (1,000 files) to go along with your 1,200 postings.

Now for the purposes of this story I am not going to get into a comparison of hosting services or the like.

The landscape is massive out there and confusing enough. You do not need me adding to it here

I will also make a few other assumptions:

• This is also based on a self-hosted Wordpress site. I am not sure if this works on WordPress.com. If anyone has tried it please comment.
• That you know the basic workings of a WordPress site such as plug-ins, directory structure, etc.
• That you have FTP access to your host and therefore your WordPress files.
• That you have access to your host to create the database and user account details for it. I will talk about phpMyAdmin because that is what my host uses. You may have a different way to access/create your database.
• That you know how to update your websites DNS info with your new host so that people can find it at its new location.
• I will only talk about one WordPress backup plug-in and that is WP-DBManager by Lester Chan. I know and understand there are others out there but this is what I used.

WP-DBManager

This smart plugin allows you to optimize database, repair database, backup database, restore database, delete backup database , drop/empty tables and run selected queries. Supports automatic scheduling of backing up and optimizing of database.

All the information (general, changelog, installation, upgrade, usage) you need about this plugin can be found here: WP-DBManager Readme. It is the exact same readme.html is included in the zip package.

So with all that said here is how I dealt with a move between hosts:

1. I backed up my current sites database using the WP-DBManager plug-in. If you use the defaults for the plug-in the backup will be stored in a sub-directory of the /wp-content/ directory called backup-db.
2. I then launched my FTP software and downloaded the entire site to a temporary folder on my hard drive. You need to make sure you grab the entire structure of your WordPress site.
3. While the download was happening I went to my new host and created a new MySQL database and user. You could always use the same details as your old host but sometime the prefix for the database name can not be changed. I recommend a fresh database name and password just for good security practices. Make sure you also get the name of the database server. You will need all of this data to get your WordPress site working on the new host.
4. I then created my domain at the new host using their control panel. At this point I did not do anything with DNS. Don’t worry though – creating your domain at the new hosts will do nothing more but prep a directory for you to access and upload your files to.
5. After the files were downloaded from my old host I placed an index.html file in the old sites main directory with a simple message that the site was being relocated. You can be as fancy or in depth as you want. I then named my WordPress index.php to index.bak so there are no conflicts between the two. This also comes in handy as the DNS shift happens because people will see your site in its new location or the moving page. Once they no longer see the moving page then they will be good to go on the new location/host. It is a great tool for seeing the DNS shift in action.
6. I then updated my wp-config.php file on my local hard drive to reflect the database information for the new host. if you have set up a WordPress site before you know how to do this already.
7. Now it was time to upload all the files to my new host from the local hard drive keeping the exact same directory structure.
8. Once the files were uploaded I updated my registrar’s DNS info for the new host and location of my site.

They say a DNS shift can take up to 48 hours to propagate around the Internet and your mileage may vary for how quick you see the update yourself. About 30 minutes after I entered the new DNS info at my registrar I flushed my local machines DNS info and was able to see the site at the new address at that point.

To flush your DNS you need to open a command.com window and type in “ipconfig /flushdns” without the quotes. If you then ping your websites URL and see it reply back with the new hosts IP address then you will be able to browse your site at its new location once everything is setup there. If it comes up with the old hosts IP address then there is nothing you can do but wait for the DNS update to get around.

Now for the database move/restoral. Some hosts restrict the size of files you can upload so you need to be aware of that for your host in these next steps. However, I am going to provide two options for restoring your database. One takes a working knowledge of phpMyAdmin or a similar MySQL database interface – the other makes use of the WP-DBManager plug-in to restore the database and site. The plug-in method can be used for small size databases as well as large ones.

Restore your database using phpMyAdmin or similar MySQL database interface:

1. I logged into my host and from the control panel I accessed phpMyAdmin logging into the interface using the credentials I created for the sites database.
2. I then went to the Import tab, browsed to the temporary directory on the hard drive where my WordPress site files were stored and went into the /wp-content/backup-db/ directory to find the backup copy of my latest version of the database. Once selected I then left everything at its default settings and clicked the Go button to import the database structure.
3. That is it – the database is now present on your new host in the new database. If your DNS is updated and everything is uploaded you should be able to type your websites address in a browser and it will come up just like it did before the move.

Restore your database using the WP-DBManager Plug-in:

In order to use this method your DNS has to be moved so you can access your site at the new host.

1. Browse to your websites address and you should be prompted to create your new site just like when you do a fresh install of WordPress. Type in your sites title and your email address and then go the the next step. You will be provided the temporary password for the admin account.
2. Log into this WordPress install and then activate the WP-DBManager plug-in. Do not worry about activating other ones. Then use this plug-in to restore the copy of your database that should have been uploaded to your new host with all the other files. It will be in that /wp-content/backup-db/ directory.
3. Once that database restores your site will be up and running with plug-ins activated, the same theme, etc.

You will likely still need to tweak a few things like file and folder permissions but if you got the entire directory structure uploaded and restored the entire database your site will be there just like on the old host.

Profiting from Free Web Hosting

The majority of the hosting companies use free hosting to introduce their services, and as an entry point to their more expensive offerings. Generally they recoup their costs in one of a few ways:

1]  Resell Hosting – This is where someone starts up a hosting company, attracts lots of visitors, then sells the hosting company to someone else once it can no longer support itself. Once sold, this individual uses the money to start up multiple hosting ventures and sells each in turn.

2] Referrals – Using a simple form of viral marketing, these providers rely on the users to spread the offer. The ratio of free to paid accounts is known, and by having each free user refer a number of friends, the hosting provider is able to get enough paid accounts to cover the cost.

3] Advertising – Selling online advertising on the customer sites is generally considered a fair trade – the reasoning is that high traffic sites are more expensive to host, but the additional traffic allows for additional ad impressions therefore covering the cost. For the web master, it can be a good trade if the advertising is of good quality and non-competitive. This is one of the main reasons that businesses do not use free hosting for their website. The majority of free hosting companies use this method.

Some hosting companies are using hybrid approaches that mix these tactics.

Methods of giving out web hosting

A few methods of giving out Free Web hosting to people by Webhosts:

1.Post for Hosting

Some free hosts require posting in a forum. Forum-based free hosting requires users to either reach a certain amount of posts before getting a free hosting account, or be an active contributor in the forum. Forum-based free hosting often work on a system of points where posts give points to a user and can be used as credits toward getting a hosting account or more resources. Typically, the forum where users have to post contains advertising as the hosts way of making a profit.

2. Instant Activation

Due to the risks of illegal, inappropriate, and abusive website, hosts with instant activation usually give very little storage space and monthly bandwidth. Other restrictions will likely also be in effect. The webhosts usually either require the users’ web pages to display their banner ads, textlink ads, or popups; or else the users’ files to be uploaded through a web-based file manager that display ads to the user uploading files.

Hosts with instant activation are often abused, such as link spamming.

3. Forum applications

This method is popular, as the hosts can decide which applications to deny and allow. This is common when a popular forum has free hosting as an add-on service, rather than the other way around.

4. File hosting on webhosts

Most free web hosts discourage using their services for file or image hosting only, with no web page, since advertising is displayed on the web page. Because of this, hotlinking is usually disallowed on free hosts. Some free webhosts will also disallow files over a certain size (for example, 5 MB). However, there are free file hosting services which allow large files as well as hotlinking.

5. Co-branding and resellers

Some services offer co-branding services. These let you brand fixed plans with your own company. Other services, offer WHM or panel reselling. This allows the client to develop his or her own web hosting plans and business.

3) Kunjungilah sedikitnya 3 situs yang reputasinya bagus sebagai pengulas (reviewer) perusahaan-perusahaan  web hosting.

4) Pilihlah yang Disk Space-nya maupun monthly Bandwidth (atau data transfer)-nya cukup besar.

5) Pastikan Up-time servernya 99,99% – 100%.

6) Pastikan web hosting plan-nya mendukung PHP, MySQL, FTP.

7) Pilih web hosting dengan fasilitas cPanel dan Fantastico versi terbaru, demi kemudahan Anda.

Bagaimana dengan Harga?

Pada umumnya, harga yang ditawarkan sesuai dengan kualitas pelayanan yang diberikan dan tingkat kehandalan operasional. Maka, jika anggaran Anda mendukung, pilihlah harga yang baik (agak mahal mungkin) namun yang menawarkan jaminan service; kalau perlu yang menawarkan jaminan uang kembali. Jangan mencari penawaran termurah.

Namun, jika Anda sudah cukup pengalaman di dunia web hosting maka Anda akan tahu harga-harga yang ekonomis untuk beberapa penawaran yang sudah standar.

Sebagai langkah awal memulai bisnis online Anda, bila anggaran Anda sangat terbatas, atau Anda ingin mencoba terlebih dahulu, maka tidak ada salahnya Anda menggunakan jasa web hosting gratis (free web hosting).

Memang kini banyak sekali provider web hosting gratis dengan fasilitas hosting yang bagus, bahkan tak kalah dengan yang berbayar. Tetapi dalam hal ini Anda harus ekstra hati-hati.

Harapannya, situs tersebut akan mudah diingat oleh pengunjung dan mereka dengan mudah kembali ke situs tersebut.

Berikut adalah data berapa nilai untuk membeli nama-nama domain tersebut:

• Business.com dibeli dengan harga US $7.5 juta.
• Wine.com dibeli dengan harga US $3 juta.
• Telephone.com dibeli dengan harga US $1.75 juta.
• Wallstreet.com dibeli dengan harga US $1.03 juta
• University.com dibeli dengan harga US $530,000 juta.

Wow! angka-angka yang fantastik untuk sekedar membeli nama domain (saat artikel ini ditulis, harga domain dotcom tidak lebih dari Rp 90.000 ,-). Anda lihat betapa luar biasanya orang ngotot untuk membeli nama-nama umum seperti itu.

Tapi coba Anda renungkan. Pernahkah Anda mengakses situs-situs di atas? Seberapa banyak Anda mengakses situs-situs di atas dibanding dengan google.com, yahoo.com, ataupun amazon.com?

Fakta mengatakan, pemenangnya adalah situs-situs semacam yahoo.com dan google.com, bukannya news.com, bookstore.com dan yang semacamnya. Perburuan nama yang sia-sia. Jika Anda memiliki nama-nama domain yang cantik, sebaiknya segera Anda jual. Siapa tahu ada maniak domain yang mau membeli domain Anda dengan harga mahal, sebelum datangnya kesadaran mereka.

Nama-nama generik memang punya daya tarik luar biasa, sebelum mereka menyadari bahwa nama-nama tersebut tidak sekuat ‘daya tarik’-nya. Nyatanya, para pemenang adalah situs-situs yang punya nama khas atau unik.

Terkait dengan keunikan tersebut, Anda dapat mempertimbangkan saran-saran berikut ini:

a.Nama sesingkat mungkin.

Semakin pendek nama domain, semakin baik. Lihatlah para pemenang: yahoo.com, google.com, ebay.com, amazon.com. Pengunjung menyukai nama yang pendek. Mereka tidak ingin dibayangin keragu-raguan saat menulis nama domain Anda yang panjang. Bagaimana pendapat Anda jika harus mengetik nama-nama domain berikut ini pada address bar di browser Anda:

• topuniversitydirectory.com
• flashnewsclip.com
• tipswebsource.com
• buildmemywebsitenow.net

b. Memadatkan nama generik.

Bila terpaksa menggunakan beberapa kata generik, gunakanlah teknik memadatkan kata-kata generik itu. Sebagai contoh, Nabisco adalah hasil pemadatan dari nama generik lamanya, National Biscuit Company. Contoh sukses lainnya adalah CNet.com (gabungan dari kata computer dan network).

c. Menonjolkan Kesederhanaan.

Sederhana di sini adalah hubungannya dengan konstruksi nama secara alfabetis. Yahoo hanya membutuhkan 4 karakter huruf.

Salah satu contoh sukses mengubah merek adalah Nissan; yang terdiri dari 4 karakter huruf. Sebelumnya ia bernama Datsun. Nissan lebih enak diucapkan ketimbang Datsun (6 karakter huruf).

Sederhana di sini tidak ada hubungannya dengan pendek. Contohnya Scwab (5 karakter) adalah nama yang pendek tetapi sulit dieja. Sebaliknya Mississipi (4 karakter) lebih enak dan mudah diucapkan ketimbang Scwab.

Menurut Anda, mana yang lebih mudah diucapkan dan ditulis: Coca Cola atau Pepsi-Cola?

d. Mudah / Dapat Diucapkan.

Anda mendapatkan info tentang sebuah situs dari teman Anda. Beberapa hari kemudian Anda ngin mengakses situs tersebut. Anda menjadi bingung sendiri, apakah situs itu itu tophuntscholarship.com, hunt scholarshiptop.com, atau scholarshiphunttop.com?

Hendaknya, dalam memilih nama domain juga tidak menimbulkan perbedaan pengucapan sehingga menimbulkan keragu-raguan. Misalnya, 5eLe3.com (dimaksudkan untuk seleb.com). Mungkin ini unik, terinspirasi dari plat nomor mobil. Tetapi ini akan menimbulkan bias dan sulit bagi orang-orang yang tidak dapat menangkap ide Anda.

e. Nama yang Menggigit.

Pertimbangkan contoh-contoh berikut ini:

• Yahoo! seperti orang yang melompat dan berteriak, “yahoo!”. Mengekspresikan kegirangan, kegembiraan, gempar.
• Amazon adalah sungai terbesar di dunia. Amazon.com ingin membuat dirinya sebagai toko buku terbesar di dunia.

Bedakan rasanya (secara emosional) dengan nama-nama seperti: bookstore.com, myemail.com, news.com. Manakah yang lebih masik ke hati Anda?

Selanjunya tips memilih nama domain yang ke-2 ialah:

2. Mitos “O”

Coba perhatikan nama-nama domain yang paling terkenal berikut ini:

• Google.com. Situs pencarian (searching enine) paling top saat ini.
• Amazon.com. Situs penjualan paling top saat ini.
• Microsoft.com. Situs software provider paling top saat ini.
• Yahoo.com. Portal paling top saat ini.

Situs-situs tersebut masuk jajaran situspaling top di dunia. Tahukah Anda kesamaan dari mereka? Yah, mereka semua mengandung huruf “O”. Menarik bukan? Walau ini adalah sebuah mitos, yang tak dapat dijamin kebenarannya, namun tak ada salahnya Anda mengikuti mitos ini.

Beberapa teman yang pernah minta saran, saya coba sarankan untuk menggunakan huruf “O” dalam merek mereka. Hasilnya, cukup bagus. Minimal, dari pengucapannya menjadi lebih smooth. Enak diucapkan dan menjadi gampang diingat.

Using permalinks, the previous URL becomes something like http://mysite.com/cooking-tips-tricks.

Why Use Permalinks?

Besides being easier to remember and use, permalinks can have positive impact on your search engine rankings.

It is believed that Google ranks pages based on appearance of keywords in the URL, among other factors. You can see a hint confirming the theory in the actual search results page, as all keywords appearing in the URL will be highlighted as well.

Setting up Permalink structure

Permalinks are edited in Settings->Permalinks screen, and best results are made if you enable  “Custom structure”. Custom means you can define permalink structure by using one of many permalink tags. Most useful are %postname% (title of the post), %post_id% (id of the post) and %category% (post category, if in multiple categories first created category will be used).

Most basic usage is only having %postname% tag and as an example you can see urls on my site which are using this structure.

Recently I am more inclined to think that using  %category%/%postname% may yield you better results if category names contain keywords you want to rank for.

Setting Permalinks for Google News

If you want to list your site in Google News, one of the requirements is to have at least three digit identifier at the end of every URL.

This is easily accomplished using %postname%-%post_id% structure, which will append post ID to the end of url so it becomes http://mysite.com/cooking-tips-tricks-344. You only have to create at least 100 pages first in order to have three digits at the end

Conclusion

Since permalinks cost you nothing to set up, there is no reason not to use them. This should be the first step you do when you install a WordPress blog as changing permalinks at a later time requires more work (you will have all incoming links to your old urls).

Be sure to check in on your web site statistics software daily, to watch for popularity trends, and see what pages are performing the best – and which might need some work done on them.  If you don’t have a good web page statistics package right now, I would highly recommend you look into using the Google Analytics service.  It is free to use, and much better than even some of the paid analytics software suits out there.
